Coachlight Bible Study – Romans Chapter 8

The Spirit Of Him That Raised Up Christ From The Dead

Previously, we have seen that it is only the Love of God that gives us access to God’s grace.  Our sinful nature has kindled the wrath of God against us, but while we were yet sinners, God Himself paid the price of our redemption.  God judges the heart, and pronounces a person just, when we believe God’s Word will and has been fulfilled.  We can not merit this pronouncement from God, it is a free gift.

From that moment on, the person is and continues to be in the middle of another Work of God, the process of sanctification. Sanctification kicks in when we realize God’s Love for us, and recon ourselves dead to sin, because of Christ’s work on the cross.  Just as Christ was raised from the dead, so we should walk in newness of life.

In this chapter, we find that the Spirit that raised Christ from the dead, is the power that gives us strength to be victorious sons of God now with hope and assurance of our rich inheritance in Christ Jesus.

I. The Holy Spirit Delivers From The Flesh’s Power - Emancipates

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: {for sin: or, by a sacrifice for sin}

Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

A. There Is No Condemnation To Them Which Are In Christ Jesus

1. If We Do Not Walk After The Flesh

2. If We Do Walk After The Spirit

B. By The Law Of The Spirit Of Life We Are Free From Sin & Death

C. God Through Christ Did What The Law Could Not Do

1. The Law Can Only Point Out Sin

2. The Law Can Not Justify

3. The Law Can Not Santify

D. The Righteousness Of The Law Might Be Fulfilled In Us

1. Christ Who Knew No Sin, In Legal Terms Was Made Sin For Us

2. We Might Be Made The Righteousness Of God In Christ

II Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

3. We Do Not Fulfill The Law By Walking In The Spirit

4. God Fulfills The Law In Us When We Walk In The Spirit

Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind<5426> the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

5426. fronew phroneo fron-eh’-o;  - Means “Set Our Affections On”

Matthew 16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest <5426> not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

Mark 8:33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest <5426> not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

Acts 28:22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest <5426>: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

Romans 8:5  For they that are after the flesh do mind <5426> the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Romans 12:3  For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think <5426>; but to think <5426> soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. {soberly: Gr. to sobriety}

Romans 12:16 Be of the same mind <5426> one toward another. Mind <5426> not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. {condescend…: or, be contented with mean things}

Romans 14:6  He that regardeth <5426> the day, regardeth <5426> it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth <5426> not the day, to the Lord he doth <5426> not regard <5426> it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. {regardeth: or, observeth}

Romans 15:5  Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded <5426> one toward another according to Christ Jesus: {according to: or, after the example of}

1 Corinthians 4:6  And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think <5426> of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.

1 Corinthians 13:11  When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood <5426> as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. {thought: or, reasoned} {put away: Gr. vanish away}

2 Corinthians 13:11  Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind <5426>, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

Galatians 5:10  I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be <5426> none otherwise minded <5426>: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.

Philippians 1:7  Even as it is meet for me to think <5426> this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. {I have…: or, ye have me in your heart} {of my…: or, with me of grace}

Philippians 2:2  Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded <5426>, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind <5426>.

Philippians 2:5  Let <5426> this mind be <5426> in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Philippians 3:15  Let <5426> us therefore, as many as be perfect, be <5426> thus minded <5426>: and if in any thing ye be <5426> otherwise minded <5426>, God shall reveal even this unto you.

Philippians 3:16  Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind <5426> the same thing.

Philippians 3:19  Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind <5426> earthly things.)

Philippians 4:2  I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of <5426> the same mind <5426> in the Lord.

Philippians 4:10  But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care <5426> of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were <5426> also careful <5426>, but ye lacked opportunity. {hath…: or, is revived}

Colossians 3:2  Set your affection <5426> on things above, not on things on the earth.

Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. {to be carnally…: Gr. the minding of the flesh} {to be spiritually…: Gr. the minding of the Spirit}

E. It Is Not What We Do – But To Whom Is Our Desire And Affection

1.  What We Desire And Think About Must Be Christ & His Word

2. If Our Meditation Is On Things Of This World – Death Is The Result

3. If Our Meditation Is On Christ – Life & Peace Is The Result

Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. {the carnal…: Gr. the minding of the flesh}

Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

F. To Meditate On Worldly Things – Is Hatred Against God

G. To Meditate On Worldly Things Constantly – Not Subject To God’s Law

H. To Meditate On Worldly Things Constantly – Can Not Please God

Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Romans 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. {by: or, because of}

J. When A Person Is Justified – His Body Is Dead Because Of Sin

K. When A Person Is Justified – The Spirit Is Life Because Of Righteousness

L. It Is The Indwelling Holy Spirit That Makes Our Dead Body Alive

II. The Holy Spirit Makes Us Sons Of God – Exalted Living

Romans 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

Romans 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

M. Paul Explains This In Colossians

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. {affection: or, mind}

Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Colossians 3:6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

Colossians 3:7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

Colossians 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Colossians 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Colossians 3:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

Colossians 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Colossians 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. {quarrel: or, complaint}

Colossians 3:14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

2. As We Seek God – The Spirit Bears Witness To Our Relationship With God

3. If We Are Lead By The Spirit – We Are Heirs Of God

4. We Are Joint Heirs With Christ – We Will Rule & Rein With Him

5. Christ Suffered On The Cross – As He Died, So We Mortify The Flesh

6. If We Are Spirit Lead – We Will Be Glorified With Christ - Rapture

III. The Holy Spirit Gives Us Our Hope – Expectant Living

Romans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Romans 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

A. Our Tribulations Are Little Compared To Our Inheritance

B. Now We Can Cry Daddy – Hope Thru The Spirit Assures Us It Will Manifest

1. We Can Know For Sure It Will Be Revealed In Us

2. The Spirit Helps Us Wait Expectantly For The Manifestation

Romans 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

Romans 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. {the…: or, every creature}

Romans 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

C. We Haven’t Seen Our Deliverance From Corruption – But It’s In The Bank

D. We Haven’t Seen Our Adoption Manifested – But It’s In The Bank

E. We Haven’t Seen The Manifestation Of Our Redemption – It’s In The Bank

Romans 8:24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

Romans 8:25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Romans 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. {because: or, that}

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Romans 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

J. God Predestinated All Of Us To Conform To His Son’s Image

1. God Is Not Willing That Any Should Perish

2. God Wants All To Come To Repentance – No Predestination To Hell!

Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; {glorious…: Gr. the appearance of the glory of the great God, and of our Saviour Jesus Christ}

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

IV. The Holy Spirit Makes Us More Than Conquerors - Victorious

Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Romans 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.

Romans 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Romans 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

A. Satan Wants God’s Kids To Loose Hope

B. If We Mind The Things Of The Spirit – We Are More Than Conquerors

Romans 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

Romans 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Romans 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
