Coachlight Bible Study – Romans Chapter 6

Sanctification – Being Dead To Sin

So far in the Book of Romans we have enjoyed God’s courtroom.  We have seen the case made that the Wrath of God has been kindled by the actions of both Jews and Gentiles.  First, the Heathen Gentile, was not thankful to God and ends up so deep in sin, that he is not able to discern right from wrong any longer.  Secondly, the self-righteous Jew, not realizing that God is his salvation, puts his trust in birthrights, signs, or his own traditions.

We have seen the 14 count indictment and God’s verdict come down showing that everyone is worthy of God’s wrath. Unlike any earthly court, the judge demonstrates ultimate mercy, and takes upon Himself the punishment in stead of the condemned man.  This act by Christ reconciled man with God.

Chapter five teaches another part of God’s work in saving mankind, the principle of Justification by Faith, where God imputes righteousness on a man (Or deposits righteousness to the man’s account).

Chapter six deals with sanctification (being separated unto God), and contrasts justification and sanctification, both being important aspects of God’s work in man’s salvation.

Many, not understanding Justification of Sanctification, have come to two deadly conclusions.  Either the conclusion that since good works can not save a man, so evil works will not condemn him either, (once saved always saved), or walk in condemnation all the time because of  continual or occasional sin in their life. A proper understanding and application of these two works of God should clear this up.

I. Sanctification – The Principle Of Being Dead To Sin

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

A. Continuation From Chapter 5

1. Since Where Sin Did Abound – Grace Did Much More Abound

2. Why Don’t We Continue In Sin (A Sin Lifestyle) So Grace Will Abound More?

a. This Is Not Concerning Occasional Sin

b. This Is Concerning A Sin Lifestyle

B. Paul Has Anticipated Antinomianism

1. A Deadly Belief Of Many Who Don’t Believe In Justification By Faith

2. “If At Justification, a person is treated as if he is righteous by God, and if good works won’t save him, then sin won’t condemn him either”

3. The True Understanding Of Justification By Faith

a. The One Justified Begins To Appreciate And Be In Awe Of God’s Grace

b. The End Result Is Thankfulness To God And Obedience

C. Paul’s Answer – God Forbid! – Paul Is Shocked That Anyone Would Concider

1. How Can A Person Continue In Sin That Is Dead To Sin?

2. How Can A Person Continue To Sin That Is Dead To Sin?

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? {were: or, are}

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

C. When We Are Baptized Into Christ – We Are Baptized Into His Death

1. Actually Baptism Means To Become A Member Of His Body

I Corinthians 12:13  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. {Gentiles: Gr. Greeks}

I Corinthians 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.

I Corinthians 12:15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

I Corinthians 12:16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

I Corinthians 12:17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

I Corinthians 12:18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

2. When We Are Baptized – Showing We Are Buried with Him Unto Death

a. Demonstrates That Sin No Longer Judicially Has A Hold Of Us

b. Here Comes The Simile

1. Like Christ Was Raised From The Dead

2. Likewise We Should Walk In Newness Of Life

3. To Explain It Another Way

a. Burial Into Christ – The Old Death Controlled Life Comes To An End

b. Like He Resurrected – Now, The New Christ-Controlled Life Begins

Romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together<4854> in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Romans 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Romans 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

Romans 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

Romans 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

D. “Planted Together” Actually Means We Are United With Christ In His Death

1. The Old Man Hung On The Cross With Christ – Sin Defeated

2. When We Are Dead, We Are Free From Sin

3. If We Died With Christ – We Will Also Live With Him

4. Christ Only Died Once For Sin – We Should Not Pick Up Death Again

5. Verse 14 – Death Has No More Dominion Over Us.

E. There Are 4 Kinds Of Death In The Bible – Means Separation

1. Physical Death – Separation Of The Body From The Spirit

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. {spirit: or, breath}

2. Spiritual Death – Separation Of A Person From God

Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

3. Second Death – Eternal Separation Of A Person From God

Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

4. Death To Sin – Separation Of A Person From The Power Of Sin

Romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

F. There Are 3 Kinds Of Life In The Bible – Means Union

1. Physical Life – Union Of The Soul With The Body

2. Spiritual Life – Union Of The Soul With God

3. Eternal Life – Eternal Union Of The Soul With God

Christ Reconciled Us With His Blood

Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

To Have God As Father Is None Of Our Own Merit – It Is The Merit Of Christ

A True Understanding Of Justification And Sanctification:

Justification Should Lead Us To Appreciation Of God’s Grace

Sanctification Should Lead Us To Obedience

H. The Way To Santification

Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon<3049> ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

3049 logizomai logizomai log-id’-zom-ahee  middle voice from 3056; TDNT-4:284,536; v

AV-think 9, impute 8, reckon 6, count 5, account 4, suppose 2, reason 1, number 1, misc 5; 41

1) to reckon, count, compute, calculate, count over

1a) to take into account, to make an account of

1a1) metaph. to pass to one’s account, to impute

1a2) a thing is reckoned as or to be something, i.e. as availing for or equivalent to something, as having the like force and weight

1b) to number among, reckon with

1c) to reckon or account

2) to reckon inward, count up or weigh the reasons, to deliberate

3) by reckoning up all the reasons, to gather or infer

3a) to consider, take into account, weigh, meditate on

3b) to suppose, deem, judge

3c) to determine, purpose, decide

This word deals with reality. If I "logizomai" or reckon that my bank book has $25 in it, it has $25 in it. Otherwise I am deceiving myself. This word refers to facts not suppositions.

A. The 3 Ways To Sanctification

1. We Need To Know We Are Baptized Into Christ’s Death – Verse 3

2. We Need To Recon We Are Dead To Sin – Verse 11

3. We Need To Yield Ourselves To God – Not To Unrighteousness – Verse 13

B. The Meaning Of “Recon” or “Logizomai” – An Important Word In Romans –

1. Commercial Use – An Objects Worth

2. Bookkeeping Use - A Projects Gains Or Losses

3. In English

a. Log – Numerical Record Of A Ship Or Plane’s Progress

b. Logistics – Military Term Concerning Movement Of Troups & Supplies

c. Logarithm – An Exponent Of A Base Number Equalling A Given Number

4. In Philosophy – The Sence Of Non-Emotional Reasoning

a. Logic

b. Logical

5. The Common Ground – Only Deals With Reality – Not Wishful Thinking

The Three Ways To Sanctification Revealed

1.) Know That We Are Baptized Into Christ’s Death – Verse 3

2.) Recon Ourselves To Be Dead To Sin, But Alive Unto God  – Verse 11

3.) Yield Ourselves To God – Don’t Yield To Unrighteousness – Verse 13

II. Sanctification – The Practice Of Being Dead To Sin

Romans 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

A. Here The Anticipation Of The Antinomian Argument Appears Again

1. There Is On Difference However

2. Instead Of , “Shall We Continue In Sin” (A Sin Lifestyle)

3. Now, “Shall We Sin?” (Occasional Excursion Into Sin)

4. “Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace?”

5. Paul’s Answer Again, God Forbid!

Romans 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

B. Paul Uses The Analogy Of A Slave Market

1. To Show That The Sanctified Man Shouldn’t Even Occasionally Fall Into Sin

2. If The Sanctified Man Does – He Is Admitting Sin Is His Master

3. Remember The Lord’s Words:

Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.

Servants of Sin Compared To Servants of Righteousness

The Analogy Of The Slave Market

Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.

Servants of Sin

Servants of Righteousness

Free From Righteousness

Free From Sin

Yields To Unrighteousness

Yields To God

The By-Product Is Shame And Continuing To Sin

The By-Product Is Holiness And To Continue Conforming To Christ’s Image

The End Result Is Death

The End Result Is Eternal Life

Freedom From Bondage To Satan Is Bondage To Christ, Who Loved Us And Gave Himself For Us.

Romans 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

C. When In Sin – Probably Acted With Gusto

1. The By-Product – Shame And Continuing To Sin

2. The End Result - Death

D. Now Yielded To The Lord

1. The By-Product – Holiness, And Continue Conforming To The Image Of Christ

2. The End Result – Eternal Life

Romans 6:20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. Romans 6:21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

E. We Can Not Work For Salvation – It Is A Free Gift Of Eternal Life

F. We Can Earn Wages By Sinning – The Pay Check Is Death
