Revelation Chapter 1

Philippians 3:7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

Philippians 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

Philippians 3:9 ¶  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

Philippians 3:11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

Philippians 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

Philippians 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:15 ¶  Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

Philippians 3:16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

The Person Jesus Christ In Glory

Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

The greatest yearning of the Spirit filled believer is to know Christ and His sufferings, as well as the power of His resurrection.  These made it possible for us to be in His presence for ever.

The Book of Revelation was given to John in A.D. 95 or 96 to write the Lord’s message to the seven churches.  He choose not only to admonish and encourage in that day teaching them to take part in their inheritance to come, but also made them to be typical or representative of all churches (or assemblies – Called out Ones) throughout the entire age.  Since this age runs from Pentecost to the Rapture of the church, this book is very important to us as well.  It then assures us that the Church will see the events of the Tribulation period from Heaven being with Him.

The message in the Book of Revelation is to be studied and applied by all – then, now, and in the future. It is a book that can and needs to be understood by all sincere Christians.  Blessings are given by Christ to those who read and hear the Words of this prophecy, and He makes it easy to interpret by giving the key of interpretation in chapter 1.

Revelation 20:1¶ And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

Revelation 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

Revelation 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Revelation 20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

C. Before This 1000 Year Reign - Earth Is Under The Rule Of Antichrist

1. A Satanically-Controlled Man

2. Revelation calls him the "beast"

3. His world-wide government will last just 42 months

4. Then he will be defeated

Revelation 13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

Revelation 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

D. Before That 42 Months Of Antichrist Reigns

1. There will be a period of 1260 days of revival by the ‘two witnesses’

2. There will be tremendous prophecies and works of miracles

Revelation 11:3 ¶And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

Revelation 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

Revelation 11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.

Revelation 11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

D. The Beast Is Allowed To Conquer The 2 Witnesses – Sets Up His Empire

Revelation 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

E. These Two Periods – 1260 days & 42 Months

1. Are consecutive - 2. Each are 3 ½ years

3. Total 7 years – 7 years just before the Millennium - 4. Called the Tribulation

a. The 1st 3 ½ years is in chapters 4-11

b. The last 3 ½ years are covered in chapters 12-19

F. There Is A Scene In Chapter 4-5 That Just Precedes This Tribulation Period

1. This scene has a tremendous assembly of redeemed saints

a. Gathered around the throne - b. Singing praises to the Lamb of God

2. This scene can only take place if Christ has returned

a. He has gathered His people - b. Taken them with Him to heaven

John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

I Corinthians 15:51¶ Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

I Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

I Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

I Thessalonians 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Matthew 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:38  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left….

Matthew 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

D. Chapter 1 Is The Introduction And Contains The Key

E. That Only Leaves Chapters 2-3 – The Church Age

a. Chapters 2 and 3 deal with the time from 100 AD to the rapture of the church

b. It only seems right that these chapters speak to the churches

IV. True & False Methods Of Interpretation

Of these four only one seeks to find out the original meaning of the Author

A. Preterist Eisogesis

1. Belief that all of Revelation has been fulfilled in the past.

2. Belief that it had to do with local references in John’s day

3. Belief that I t had to do with the days of either Nero or Domitian.

B. Historical Eisogesis

1. The belief that the fulfillment of Revelation is going on in history

2. The belief that Revelation is the prophetic history of the church

C. Historical-spiritual Eisogesis

1. A refinement of the historical eisogesis

2. Was stated by Sir William Ramsay

3. The belief that the two beasts are Imperial and Provincial Rome

4. The belief that the point of the book is to encourage Christians

a. Revelation has been largely fulfilled

b. There are only spiritual lessons in Revelation for the church today

5. Amillennialism, for the most part, has adopted this

6. This Isogesis dissipates and defeats the purpose of Revelation

D. Futurist Exegesis

1. The belief that God is the primary Author of Scripture

2. The belief that our duty is to extract His meaning

3. The belief that the Book of Revelation is primarily prophetic and yet future

(From chapter 4 on – revelation 1:18-19)

4. This is the view of all pre-millennialists – of which view I share

V. Unique Features Of The Book Of Revelation

A. It is the only prophetic book in the New Testament (17 In O.T.)

E. Revelation is not a sealed book (Revelation 22:10). Contrast Daniel 12:9

F. Revelation is a series of visions, expressed in symbols

1. It’s parts are to be taken literally unless John makes it clear that it is a symbol

2. The symbols always point a shadow to and mean something that is tangible

3. The pointed to meaning is superior to the symbol characterizing it

G. Revelation Begins Nothing – Consummates Everything

Contrasts and Comparisons Between
The Two Phases of Christ’s Second Coming

Christ’s Coming for the Church, the Rapture

Christ’s Coming to the World

(1) At His second coming to earth, no translation is seen (Zechariah 14:4).

(2) His coming is as a thief. Only believers of the church will see him (Acts 1:11; I Thessalonians 4:17).

(2) Every eye shall see Him, it is open, public, and manifest to the world (Revelation 5:16; Matthew 24:30).

(3) Believers are taken off the earth and unbelievers remain to go into the Tribulation (1 Thessalonians. 4:13-17; John 14:3).

(6) Christ comes as our Deliverer from the wrath to come. He keeps believers out of the Tribulation (1 Thessalonians 4:18; 5:9-10; Revelation 3:10).

(6) Christ comes as Judge. The world is judged (Matt. 25:31-32, 46; Rev. 6-19; Matthew 3:11-12; Joel. 2:1-11; 3:1-17; Jude 15.

Application: Revelation is very important for us to have knowledge of Jesus Christ.  It is the unveiling of Christ which we will not get from the Gospels.  Is this important?

II Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

II Corinthians 10:4 -5(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
