Coachlight Bible Study – Hebrews Chapter 2

Christ Is Superior Because Of Who He Is – His Humanity

In the last chapter we were taught that God spoke to people through the prophets at various times and through various methods; but now God speaks to us through His Son, Christ. We also saw the argument that Christ was better than the angels, that some were worshiping, because He had a better name, He was the Creator, the angels worship Him, He has an eternal Righteous Kingdom, and now sits at the right hand of the Father until: “I make Thine enemies Thy footstool.”  These arguments all pointed to Christ’s deity.

Here in chapter two, we will see another argument demonstrating that Christ is better than the angels, because of His humanity, and  how it all fits into God’s plan.

The exhortation is to instruct us not to let ourselves slip away from the God’s Word, like a ship can drift away from its slip.

I. The First Exhortation Or Warning In Hebrews

Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed<4337> to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip<3901>. {run out as leaking ships}

Hebrews 2:2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

Hebrews 2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will? {gifts: or, distributions}

A. Don’t let Great Salvation “slip”

1. The meaning of: “slip”

3901 pararruew pararrhueo par-ar-hroo-eh’-o  AV-let slip 1; 1

2. The meaning of “Give the more earnest heed”

4337 prosecw prosecho pros-ekh’-o; v

beware 7, give heed to 5, take heed to 3, give or take heed unto (to) (whereunto) 3

1) to bring to, bring near

1a) to bring a ship to land, and simply to touch at, put in

2) to turn the mind to, attend to be attentive

3. Meaning-“Take heed so that our salvation doesn’t slip like a ship drift out to sea”

B.  There is no escape if we “neglect”

1. Meaning of Neglect – “To recognize but ignore” – “To know but fail to do”

2. The Great salvation:

a. The steadfast message was delivered by the angels

(Galatians 3:19; Acts 7:53)

b. Every transgression and disobedience had its reward

C.  The Great salvation was

1.  First spoken of by the Lord

2. Confirmed by the Apostles

D. God gave witness

1. With signs and wonders

2. With many kinds of miracles

3. With gifts of the Holy Ghost

E. “Neglect so great salvation” does not mean “grab hold more earnestly”

F. It does mean don’t let ourselves drift beyond God’s Word

1. Don’t compromise with “traditions of men” – Colossians 2:8

2. Don’t go back to legalism – Colossians 2:11-17; 20-23; Hebrews 10:26

II. The 2nd Argument Concerning Christ Superior Over The Angels

Hebrews 2:5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

Hebrews 2:6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Hebrews 2:7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: {lower…: or, while inferior to}

A. The angels will not reign in His Kingdom – Christ and the redeemed will

1. A man was created lower than angels

Psalm 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

2. The Son of Man was made (Incarnated) lower than the angels for a while

Psalm 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Psalm 8:5 For thou hast made him a little<04592> lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

3. The Son of Man has creation dominion – Messianic & synonymous parallelism

Psalm 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

Psalm 8:7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; {All…: Heb. Flocks and oxen all of them}

Psalm 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

Psalm 8:9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

B. God sees things differently than we do – We, now, do not see the whole picture

Hebrews 2:8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

1. Because of God’s foreknowledge, Christ has already been crowned

a. God looks through and sees the beginning through to the end

b. There is nothing that is not under His subjection

2. Right now we do not see this – unless we put on the mind of Christ

Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little<1024> lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. {for the: or, by the}
