Coachlight Bible Study – Lesson V – Marriage Part II
Genesis 2:19 – 2:25 – The 1st Human Institution Established
We have come to an exciting part of the Biblical record in Genesis. We will review what we learned in the last lesson about how the theory of evolution really is complete nonsense. For “Christians” to try and compromise with evolution (Theistic Evolution) is folly. The two are completely incompatible. For the purposes of this lesson we will lump both evolution and theistic evolution as virtually the same.
While Genesis chapter one refutes all the religions, such as polytheism, pantheism, materialism, dualism, humanism, and evolutionism, it also demonstrates the utter ignorance of such philosophies. There was no eye witness to what is taught as events before man appeared in man’s traditions. Only the true Biblical Record has an eyewitness, and that eyewitness is the Creator Himself. Chapter one through the fourth verse of chapter two is His account.
There are some that say that Genesis 2:19 contradicts chapter one. This completely ignores the context, however. This interpretation would teach that the animals were formed after Adam, contradicting chapter one. This ridiculous interpretation would say that God first tried to make a help meet for Adam using the animals, and when this failed, God used plan b the creation of woman. The fact that the Hebrew word translated “formed” is Yatser and can just as well mean “had made”. This, of course, is the proper rendering, and fits the context.
But in the second chapter of Genesis, a part of the book of Adam’s generations, we have the complete despair of the theistic evolutionists in the account of the creation and formation of Eve. Even if a person can make himself believe that man came about from some ape ancestor, and this is his interpretation of God forming Adam from the dust of the ground, there is no way that the Biblical account of Eve’s origin can be explained in evolutionary terms. To make it worse for the theistic evolutionists, both Paul and Christ Himself explicitly confirms the historicity of this account.
The first institution established by God was marriage. Because human infancy and helplessness requires careful protection and training of the children, God, in His wisdom ordained that the home, built on the mutual love and respect of the husband and wife, should be the basic unit of authority and instruction.
But there was more on the mind of the Creator as He ordained this institution. In may ways the Church was ordained by God after the pattern of the family. The Bible also teaches us that Adam is a “type of Christ”. Our word “type” comes from the Greek word Tupos, which means “pattern” or “shadow” of something else – a antitype. In I Corinthians, Adam is called the “First Adam” and Christ is called the “Second Adam”:
I Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
I Corinthians 15:46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
I Corinthians 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
I. Evolution In Any Form Is Not Compatible With The Biblical Record |
||
Day Of Creation |
Biblical Record |
Evolution Teaching |
1st Day – “Foundations of the Earth” The Universe Created & Energized |
In the beginning God created the heaven & earth out of nothing. |
The universe originated in a “natural” way, by means of an explosion and much time, or other such nonsense. |
No sin or death until Adam sinned – Romans 5:12 God pronounced each day as “Good” |
Gap Theory - A Pre-Adamite Civilization struggled and died for existence after Satan fell. God destroyed them and started over in Genesis 1:2 |
|
2nd Day – “Water & Sky” Hydrosphere & Atmosphere |
God separated the waters above and below the earth – Antediluvian world much different than the present |
Uniformity – “The Present is the key to the Past” |
God created the universe in six literal days & rested on the 7th day. Compared to the human work week. Exodus 20:9-11 |
Day-Age Theory - Each creation day was not a literal “day”, but geologic ages. Use II Peter 3:8 as pre-text |
|
3rd Day – “Land & Vegetation” Lithosphere & Plant Biosphere |
No Vertical Evolution - Plants, Animals, & Man reproduces only after their own “kind”. Mutations & Freaks don’t reproduce. (Mule) |
All plants, animals & man evolved from “simple” one celled animals in a “primordial goo” of some kind. |
4th Day – “Sun, Moon, & Stars” Atmosphere & Celestial Sphere |
Heaven & Earth created on day one – Genesis 1:1 – 5 Sun, Moon, & Stars on day 4. Genesis 1:14-19 |
The earth “spun off” the sun or some other heavenly body & cooled down. |
5th Day – “Fish & Birds” Animal Life for the Atmosphere & Hydrosphere |
Land plants created first, then marine creatures and birds created simultaneously. |
Marine organisms evolved first, then land plants and later birds |
The largest sea animals were created first
|
Whales evolved from four legged land mammals, which in turn had to evolve from cold blooded marine creatures |
|
6th Day – “Beasts & Man” Animals for the Biosphere & Man |
Plants & Trees created on day three, but insects created on day six.
Man different than animals – Created in the image of God |
A period of millions of years elapsed for marine organisms to evolve into plants and trees, and more millions of years for plants to evolve into birds, animals & man. |
But, the formation of Eve can not, in any way, be interpreted in light of evolutionary teaching! |
Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. {meet…: Heb. as before him}
Genesis 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. Genesis 2:20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
II. Adam Gets Acquainted With The Animals
A. Two reasons for Adam to get acquainted with the animals
1. To show Adam his responsibilities with the animal kingdom. (Genesis 1:28.)
2. While Adam ruled the animals, he could not have fellowship with them,
3. There was not one animal that was qualified to be an help meet for dam
B. Liberals Point To Verse 19 Saying It Contradicts Chapter One
1. They say that the birds and land animals were created after Adam
2. This is ripping verse 19 out of its context
a. Chapter One has just given the chronology of the days of creation
b. Yatser, translated “formed” can just as easily mean “had formed”
c. The conjunction Waw, translated “and” can just as well be “also”
3. They teach that God first tried to have a help meet for Adam by animals
4. When this didn’t work, God used plan B and made woman.
C. The animals were already in existence like chapter one teaches
1. The chronology was given in chapter one
2. There was no need for Adam to go through the chronology again
3. No need to mention the animals except when they were to encounter man
4. Verse 19 reiterates that the animals were formed out of the ground like man
5. This was to demonstrate the difference – Man was created in God’s image.
D. Point is to show that animals, already in existence, were brought to Adam
1. God lined up animals (Probably in pairs) for Adam to inspect
a. Undoubtedly only the animals which would be companions to man
b. Include birds, animals that could be domesticated, and small beasts
c. No fish, creeping things, and large beasts
2.Not likely that all the animals lived in Eden – God directed them
3. Adam inspected and named all the animals God directed to him
E. Adam’s Reaction To Passing Animals - Awarness Of His Own Uniqueness
1. In superiority, In spiritual-ness, & in his aloneness
2. None of the animals were fit to provide fellowship (Something in common)
3. This would not be if Adam had just evolved from ape ancestors
4. No where in the animal kingdom could there be found a helper like him
5. Even though Adam was surrounded by creatures, He was completely alone.
III. The Building Of Woman – A Sermon Preached by God
Genesis 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs<06763>, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
Genesis 2:22 And the rib<06763>, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he<01129> a woman, and brought her unto the man. {made: Heb. builded}
Genesis 2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. {Woman: Heb. Isha} {Man: Heb. Ish}
Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Genesis 2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

A. God Put Adam Into A Deep Sleep
1. This was not to prevent pain – There was no pain or suffering in the world as yet
2. There must be some profound spiritual message here
3. It is almost like Adam died – but there was not yet any death in the world
4. Somehow Adam was picturing death to obtain his bride to share his life
B. On This Side of History (Calvary) – It is Hard Not To Picture Christ
1. This is God’s First Proclamation Of The Everlasting Gospel
Revelation 14: 6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
2. This is God’s First Proclamation of the Lamb:
Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
C. Adam’s Side Was Wounded To Obtain His Bride
1. The word Tsela, translated “rib” is used 41 times in the Old Testament, and only translated “rib” twice, but “side” 19 times.
2. The “side” that God took from Adam, God “Built” a woman
a. A side would include both flesh & bone, as well as blood
b. Adam could later say “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh.”
c. Both flesh & bone are sustained by the blood – Genesis 9:4; Leviticus 17:11
3. The word Banah, translated “made” only three times, but built 340 out of 376.
4. From the “life” (Blood sustaining his flesh and bones) God built Eve – Adam’s Bride
5. Eve was made from Adam’s side to work along side him in the great commission – to fill and subdue the earth.
1. Eve had the same “flesh” – (Body) as Adam
2. Eve had the same “life” – (soul) as Adam
3. Eve had the same “eternal spirit” – (God’s Image) as Adam directly from God
(Genesis 1:27)
4. And being “Joined unto the Lord” they would become one spirit (I Corinthians 6:17)
5. All the descendants of Adam & Eve have inherited physical & mental characteristics
a. Each has an eternal spirit directly from God (Zechariah 12:1)
b. Each person’s spirit returns as his body returns to dust (Ecclesiastes 12:7)
D. This, Of Course, Reminds Us Again Of The One At Calvary
1. His side was pierced as He entered that deep sleep of death
2. Out of His side came blood & water – John 19:34-36
3. Likewise the Bride of Christ (II Corinthians 11:2)
a. Has received His blood (John 6:54-56)
b. Has become members of His body, flesh, and of His bones (Ephesians 5:30)
E. The Bride Is Presented
1. When God finished “Building” a bride for Adam
a. When Adam woke from his sleep God “Brought her unto man”
b. In like manner God is now forming a Bride for Christ
Acts 15:14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
Acts 15:15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
Acts 15:16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
Acts 15:17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.
Acts 15:18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.
c. God is “building up” (That’s what edifying means) the body (Ephesians 4:11-16)
4. When this work is finished
a. God will bring the Bride to the Lord Jesus
b. He will go to meet her
John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
c. She will be evermore joined to the Lord
I Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
I Thessalonians 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
Revelation 19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. {white: or, bright}
Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
Revelation 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Revelation 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
F. Bone Of My Bones, Flesh Of My Flesh
1. When the bride was presented, Adam said,
“This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman [Isha], because she was taken out of man [ish].”
2. Before Adamah had been used for man
3. Then Adam said:
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh”
4. The nature of marriage is now established
a. Kids are to be subject to parents until they are ready to make their own home
b. Then, as bride and groom, they leave their parent’s home
c. They are to become one flesh from that time on
d. Notice that the permanent home is important enough for God to make it clear from the beginning
e. Man has perverted the concept of marriage, but as Christ said:
Matthew 19:3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
Matthew 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
Matthew 19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
Matthew 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Matthew 19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
Matthew 19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
Matthew 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
G. The Man and His Wife Were Not Ashamed
1. The first marriage was consummated – First home was established
2. Adam & Eve were truly “One Flesh”
3. They each complemented each other
a. Physically - b. Mentally - c. Spiritually
4. Before sin entered, “They were naked, but were not ashamed”
a. There were no other people of which to be embarrassed
b. Their physiology was in accord with God’s purpose – Felt perfectly natural
c. They were still innocent with no consciousness of sin
d. God’s command was to fill the earth
e. There was no reason for their physical union to bring guilt feelings
H. God Established The Institution Of Marriage - A Word Picture Of Christ:
Ephesians 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
1. What is the will of the Lord for the individual?
a. Be filled with the Spirit – Not filled with excessive wine
b. Speak to yourselves psalms, hymns, spiritual songs to the Lord
c. Always giving thanks to the Father in Christ’s name
Ephesians 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Ephesians 5:24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
2. What is the will of the Lord for wives?
a. submit one to another in the fear of the Lord
b. Wives submit to the husband as unto the Lord
c. The husband is to live projecting a picture of Christ and the church
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Ephesians 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
Ephesians 5:29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
3. What is the will of the Lord for husbands?
a. Love your wife as Christ loved the church
b. Husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies
c. The husband is to live projecting a picture of Christ and the church
4. Then Paul quoted someone:
Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Ephesians 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
4. What was the mystery – Marriage was established to preach the Gospel of Christ and the Church
Building of Isha – Picture of Christ & The Church |
|
Adam |
Christ |
At first A Dim Picture - Adam is a “figure” Tupos of Christ (Romans 5:14) |
Christ is called the "Second Man" (I Corinthians 15:47), and "Last Adam" (I Corinthians 15:45) |
Adam was put to a deep sleep. Something was taken from his side, for God to “build” Adam’s bride. (Genesis 2:21) |
Jesus is called the “Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8) |
When Adam woke the bride was presented to him by God. Adam then said: “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” (Genesis 2:22) |
Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. Ephesians 5:31 “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”
|
Now all is clear - Adam is a picture of Christ, who left His Father's house to gain His bride, at the price of His own life. Jesus, the Last Adam, like the first, must be put to sleep to purchase His bride, the church, and Jesus died on the cross and slept for three days in the tomb. His side too, was opened after He had fallen asleep, and from that wounded side redemption flowed. The church - His body also purchased. The church, like Eve, was a new creation, not by a natural birth, but by a supernatural operation by God. |
