Coachlight Bible Study – Lesson V – Marriage Part I

Genesis 2:4 – 2:17 - What Was On The Creator’s Mind?

The book of Hebrews tells us that God, in the past has spoken to us by the prophets; and today God is speaking to us through the Son, Who is appointed heir of all things.  We have spent much time in the study of Genesis chapter one with the sole purpose of extracting what God meant from His Word when He inspired His Word.  This purpose includes taking a stand against the tendency to project our preconceived or pre-learned ideas into God’s Word.  It is my firm belief that if the Creator God is speaking to us, we need to understand what God meant when He spoke.

The first chapter and the first four verses of chapter two could have been written by none other than God Himself, because nobody else was around.  The exclusive use of Elohim, which is what God called Himself, in chapter one, and the use of YHWH (Probably pronounced Yahweh) Elohim which is what Adam called God in his book, (Genesis 2:4 – 5:1) illustrates this well.

The Creator did not only give us account of the events during the days of creation, but is constantly preaching a sermon to us.  The book of Genesis begins by demonstrating who God is, His very nature, and paints word pictures of the Heir of all things on every page.  This is demonstrated by teaching the work of each of the trinity in the first three verses!  The Creator also anticipated the false teachings that would come about after creation, like Evolution and the compromising Theistic Evolution, and refutes both. The Biblical Record and the teachings of Evolution can not co-exist, and are not compatible in any sence.  Men try to blend together the Biblical eyewitness account and the so called “scientific” theory of evolution, but this falls way short of the truth or common sense, and proposes a purposeless existence for mankind.  What possible hope for the future can an evolutionist have?

God’s record, on the other hand, has a purpose and a hope.  In this lesson, we will begin to see the Gospel message that God is preaching to us, and begin to understand what was in the mind of God when He created the space, mass, time continuum for man kind.

I. Revelation Is The Only Key To The Past – Not the Present

Creation’s First Day

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Genesis 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

Genesis 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day

A. The First Day is the work of the Divine Trinity creating the 3 forms of energy

1. Father creates nuclear energy – holds the integrity of matter – The Source

2. Spirit of God creates gravitational energy – The Energizer

3. Word creates Light and separates the Light from Darkness – The Revealer

B. The Gap Theory is refuted by grammar, common sense & Scripture

1. We see that each verse, except the first begins with the conjunction “and”

a. Joins each verse together sequentially & chronologically

b. Doesn’t allow for a gap between verses one and two

2. God pronounced His creation good – there was no struggle or death

3. Sin and consequently death did not begin until Adam sinned:

Romans 5:12  Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Creation’s Second Day

Genesis 1:6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. {firmament: Heb. expansion}

Genesis 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

Genesis 1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

C. God divided the waters

D. Water vapor suspended over the earth for protection against harmful rays

E. A firmament (stretched out thinness) separated the waters – 2 reasons

1. Provide a means for longevity of life

2. Provide a source of water for the flood to come

F. Evolutionary scientists wouldn’t understand this – Think Bible is a fable

1. The first assumption for evolution is Uniformity – Present is key to the past

2. An earth very different before the flood would be foreign to them

G. Day Age Theory is refuted by common sense & Scripture

1. The word day – Yom – is used three ways in Genesis

a. A 12 hour period of light – (Genesis 1:5, 14, 16, 18)

b. A 24 hour period

c. The entire creative week (Genesis 2:4)

2. “Evening and morning were the…” defines the use of the word “day”

3. With a simile, Moses defines the use of the word Yom as the same length as in Exodus:

Exodus 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

Exodus 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Who Would Want To Work 6 Geologic Ages?

Creation’s Third Day

Genesis 1:9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

Genesis 1:10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

Genesis 1:12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

H. Verse 11 – does not show evolution as some suggest

1. “Let the earth bring forth grass” – the word “bring forth” is dasha, meaning “spread forth”

2. The command from the Word of God is the same form as verse 3

3. The Biblical record is trees created before marine organisms

4. Evolution teaches trees evolved from marine organisms

Creation’s Forth Day

Genesis 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: {the day…: Heb. between the day and between the night}

Genesis 1:15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

Genesis 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. {to rule the day…: Heb. for the rule of the day, etc.}

Genesis 1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

Genesis 1:18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

I. “Let there be lights in the firmament” – Reversal from evolution account

1. Biblical order – God created Light on the first day & the Sun on the forth

2. Evolution teaches the earth “spun off” the sun or some such relationship

Creation’s Fifth Day

Genesis 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

Genesis 1:21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

Genesis 1:23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

J. “Let the waters bring forth abundantly..” (the fish and birds) – Is not as some say that the waters generated life

1. The word Sharatz , translated “bring forth” actually means “swarm or team”

a. It was not an act of the water – It was an act of God’s Word

b. Literally means “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures”

2. The Biblical order is that birds and fish appear simultaneously

3. Evolution teaches reptiles appearing before birds

K. “And God created great whales”  - Flies in the face of evolutionists who teach the first animals in the ocean were single celled, so called “simple” organisms.

1. The word tannim, translated “whale” also means dragon, sea monster, & serpent

a. Serpent – Exodus 7:9-10, 12

b. Dragon – Isaiah 51:9 & Ezekiel 29:3

c. Sea monster – Psalm 148:7

2. The Biblical Record is one of the largest sea animals created first

3. Evolution teaches that whales evolved from four legged land mammals, which in turn had to evolve from cold blooded marine creatures

Creation’s Sixth Day

Genesis 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

Genesis 1:25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Genesis 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

 Genesis 1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. {life: Heb. a living soul}

Genesis 1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

L. “Let the earth bring forth the living creature..” – Shows the use of Yom, “day” & demonstrates that the bible and evolution are not compatible.

1. The word yatsa, translated “bring forth” actually means “proceed from or depart”

2. Biblical Record is that grass, herbs & trees created on the third day & all land animals including insects not created until the 6th day.

3. How could the grass, herbs & trees survive geological ages without pollination?

Creation’s Seventh Day

Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

Genesis 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

A. The meaning of the Sabbath is not at first clear- even if we go to Exodus 20:

Exodus 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

Exodus 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

B. But God clears it up later in the book of Hebrews: After teaching that the Isrealites did not enter into His rest because of unbelief:

Hebrews 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. Hebrews 4:3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Hebrews 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

Hebrews 4:5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

Hebrews 4:6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

Hebrews 4:7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Hebrews 4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. {Jesus: that is, Joshua}

Hebrews 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

Hebrews 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

Hebrews 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. {unbelief: or, disobedience}

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

C. Does this make the verse in Colossians clearer?

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. {affection: or, mind}

Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

II. God’s Sermon

A. The Bible - Picture book with descriptive portraits on almost every page.

1. Two Types of pictures.

a. Visual - Those drawn by pen, pencil, or brush, or taken by photography.

b. Mental – Images drawn on the canvas of the mind – word pictures

2. The Bible contains the outline of the central person of the book.

a. It has been said: "You have never found the true interpretation of any passage until you have found in it somewhere a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ."

b. Jesus made this claim when people questioned His authority

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Continuing on in John 5:

John 5:45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is [one] that accuseth you, [even] Moses, in whom ye trust.

John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.

c. Jesus once more asserted this after the resurrection. On the road to Emmaus:

Luke 24:25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

Luke 24:26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

B. The word pictures of Christ are etched upon every page of Scripture

1. The first mention of Jesus - very first verse:

a. Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

b. We would never recognize the outline if we read no further.

But in the Gospel of John...

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.

John 1:1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

That great Creator was Jesus Christ - reading on we find this concept without a shadow of doubt:

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

2. Jesus is the Creator and the Word of God. No less than 10 times in Genesis do we read "and God said" - It was by the Word of God that all was created.

a. Paul says of Jesus in Colossians:

Colossians1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Colossians1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

b. David says in Psalms

Psalm 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

3. Without the rest of the Bible we would not be able to identify Jesus in Genesis - they illuminate the faint outline so there is no doubt.

C. Second Word Picture

1. John says:

John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

2. And Jesus Himself declares, at the healing of the blind man:

John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

3. Again Jesus declares:

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

4. And again Jesus declares:

John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

D. 3rd Word Picture:

1. Jesus, the Light of the World, is the great Separator between things of the earth and heaven.

2. The presence of of light attracts and awakes some, but repels others.

3. An illustration would be:

a. That Birds wake in the morning with a song,

b. But bats and other blood thirsty animals seek cover under darkness.

4. Concerning the separation of light and darkness, John says:

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. {reproved: or, discovered}

John 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

5. The Message Continues in I John

I John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

I John 1:16 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

I John 1:17 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

I John 1:18 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

I John 1:19 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

6. How do we “Walk in the Light?”

I John 2:1 5 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

I John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

I John 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

E. Creation Of Woman

Genesis 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

Genesis 2:22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. {made: Heb. builded}

Genesis 2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

A. Adam Is A Picture Of Christ.

1. Christ is called the "Second Man" (I Corinthians 15:47)

2. Christ is called the "Last Adam" (I Corinthians 15:45)

I Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

I Corinthians 15:46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

I Corinthians 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.

B. A Superlatively Beautiful Picture

Genesis 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

C. Adam slept

1. God created from his wounded side a wife - part of himself

2. Adam paid for her by the shedding of blood.

3. When Adam woke up he said:

Genesis 2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

D. This Is A Very Dim Picture At First-

Let Paul Shed Some Light. Speaking Of Marriage In Christ And After Quoting Adam, He Says In Ephesians:

Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

E. Now All Is Clear

1. Adam is a picture of Christ,

2. Christ left His Father's house to gain His bride, at the price of His own life.

3. Jesus, the Last Adam, like the first, must be put to sleep to purchase His bride,

4. And Jesus died on the cross and slept for three days in the tomb.

5. His side too, was opened after He had fallen asleep,

6. And from that wounded side redemption flowed.

F. The Church

1. His body also purchased.

2. The church, like Eve, was a new creation,

3. A new Creation - Not by a natural birth, but by a supernatural operation by God.

 G. Conclusion Of God’s Sermon

1. This is the picture of our great Redeemer, as seen on page 1 of God's album.

2. Jesus died on the cross

3. His side was opened

3. And by the Holy Spirit today a bride is being prepared

4. And when the last member is added, He will bring her unto the man Jesus.

Paul said in the book of Ephesians:

Ephesians 5:25 ... even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

What Was On The Mind Of The Creator?

Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
