in Genesis – The Flood – Lesson 1
The Causes and Judgment of the flood
Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
I. Noah was saved because
he had faith in the Word of God.
A. His faith concerned an ark in which he and his family would be saved.
B. He became heir to righteousness, by preserving the pure line of the “Seed of the Woman.” – the coming redeemer
C. We are saved in the very same way, by faith in God's Word
1. Concerning His Son Jesus Christ, our Savior from the coming judgment,
2. This judgment - the flood event was a picture and a type.
D. The4 purpose of this lesson - We won’t fail to see the ark of Noah a type of the coming Redeemer, the Lord Jesus.
A. Satan’s purpose and that of his fallen angels was to corrupt the human race and thereby do away with the pure stock of Adam - through whom the Seed of the Woman should come.
1. This would avert their own doom
2. And make it possible for Satan and his kingdom to keep control of planet earth indefinitely. Remember the prophecy given to Satan by God that the Seed of the Woman would defeat Satan
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and
between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy
head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
1. It serves notice on Satan - Although he seems to have won the skirmish against the Word of God, It is only the beginning of a conflict which will end in complete victory for the Seed of the Woman.
2. It is an Illustration of Grace - This promise of victory was given soon after the fall, and before banishment from the garden. God had declared the same penalty of death, both physical and spiritual, upon their sin, and so before the poor sinner could die and be lost forever, God came with the glorious promise of redemption.
3. First Clear Mention of the Virgin Birth - Every human being born since the days of Adam and Eve is seed of Adam. The seed is always traced through the male line - with one exception. Jesus is called the Seed of the Woman. This is the only place in the Bible where a person is called "Seed of the Woman." It was Eve who fell before, and God has designed that the woman should bring forth the Redeemer.
4. Two Seeds Mentioned - The Seed of the Woman and the seed of Satan. Since the Seed of the Woman was to be a person, the seed of the serpent will also be a person. These two seeds are later identified as Christ and the Antichrist.

daughters were born unto them,

the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they [were] fair; and they took
them wives of all which they chose.
III. “Daughters of men” and “sons of God”.
Word Study
Sons
of God –
Found
in the Old Testament only in the two oldest books, everytime
meaning fallen angels, except Job 38:7 means angels of God shouting for joy at
creation
Genesis 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and
they took them wives of all which they chose.
Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after
that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children
to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of
renown.
Job 1:6 Now
there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came
also among them. {Satan:
Heb. the adversary} {among: Heb. in
the midst of}
Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present
themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself
before the LORD.
Job 38:7 When
the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Sons of God in the New Testament means something
entirely different – the believer is a son of God.

1 John 3:1 Behold, what
manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world
knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are
we the sons of God, and it doth not
yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall
be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
A. "Daughters of men" - (Hebrew, singular; the man Adam, therefore not the daughters of Cain, Seth, or men in general)
B. "Sons of God" - Seth did not have a son until 235 years after Creation; and his son did not have a son until 325 years after Creation. (Genesis 5:3,6,9)
1. They could not have been sons of Seth, for these marriages took place when men began to multiply - in the very beginning of the race before Seth had sons of
Marriageable age.
2. The term, sons of God, proves that they were the product of God, not Seth.
3. "Sons of God" were the fallen angels of I Peter 3:19; II Peter 2:4; and Jude 6:7
I Peter
I Peter 3:18
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he
might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the
Spirit:
I Peter
I Peter 3:20
Which sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in
the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight
souls were saved by water.

II Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast
[them] down to hell, and delivered [them] into chains of darkness, to be
reserved unto judgment;
II Peter 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth
[person], a preacher of righteousness, ringing in the flood upon the world of
the ungodly;
Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left
their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness
unto the judgment of the great day.
IV. Giants and sons
of God
Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after
that, when the sons of God came in unto the
daughters of men, and they bare [children] to them, the same [became] mighty
men which [were] of old, men of renown.
A. Four Facts About Giants
and the sons of God.
1. Giants have lived on earth and are found in many Scriptures.
2. The fact that giants have no resurrection (Isaiah 26:14) proves that
giants were not ordinary men. All
ordinary men are to be resurrected (John
3. The fact that giants came only from a union of sons of God and daughters of men proves that their fathers were not ordinary men of the Adamite stock. No such monstrosities have been nor can be produced from a union of ordinary men and women, regardless of how righteous the father was or how wicked the mother was.
4. God's law of reproduction
from the beginning has been to every thing his own kind. It is not possible then, that giants could be produced by men
and women. (Genesis
B. The fallen angels
sin was fornication is given in Jude 6-7, with the example of
Jude 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left
their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness
unto the judgment of the great day.
Jude 7 Even
as Sodom and Gomorra, and the cities about them in like manner, giving
themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth
for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
V. The
1. It was not because Noah was alarmed at the increasing wickedness of man that he perceived that judgment was impending, and therefore sought a plan.
2. There is no hint that Noah anticipated a flood. There had evidently been no rain until that time, and so an idea of a deluge was far from Noah's mind.
3. Before the flood came,
instructions were given to Noah to build an ark. The idea for the salvation of Noah and his
family existed in the mind of God.
A. Planned by God - As the arc was planned by God, so too was the Antitype of the arc.
1. The Lord Jesus was foreordained by God to meet the judgment of sin. (typified by the flood), and make provision for the elect. Peter tells us of Christ in I Peter:
I Peter
And in the book of Revelation He is called:
Revelation 13:8 ....
the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
2. Not only was the arc designed and planned by God in every detail, but Noah and his family were also planned for long before they were born. Paul says of us, who are represented by Noah in the book of Ephesians:
Ephesians 1:3 Blessed [be] the
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who
hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly [places] in Christ:
Ephesians 1:4 According
as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should
be holy and without blame before him in love:
Ephesians 1:5 Having predestined us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, ......
Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we
have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of him who worketh
all things after the counsel of his own will:
B. It is all of Grace - Noah had no part in the planning of this mighty ship. All the blueprints and specifications were furnished by God, and no man had a hand in it at all. Now all of this is in harmony with the lesson we had concerning the coats of skins. Not a detail is overlooked. Man must have no part in salvation, as we read in the book of Genesis:
Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the
wickedness of man [was] great in the
earth,
and [that] every imagination of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil
continually.
Genesis 6:6 And
it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at
his heart.
Genesis 6:7 And the LORD said, I
will destroy man whom I have created
from
the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the
fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
And the Word goes on to say in verse 8:
Genesis
6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
C. Supernatural Revelation - God gave a supernatural revelation concerning the coming judgment:
Genesis 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
1. "All Flesh" - Is a synecdoche for corrupted man. (A synecdoche is a figure of speech meaning that you are stating the whole group, while only meaning a part of the group. Ex. A news commentator might say the whole town came to see the President, but he did not mean that all the nursing homes, nurseries, hospitals, etc. were emptied, but just most of the town) Noah and his family were the only pure Adamite stock left on the earth. The entire race had (except for Noah and his family) become a mixture of fallen angels and men, or giants. Only Noah and his family had preserved their pedigree pure from Adam.
Genesis 6:9 These
[are] the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man [and] perfect in his
generations, [and] Noah walked with God.
("Perfect" - Tamim - "without blemish" - meaning bodily perfection not moral)
2. No sooner had God announced judgment for sin than He gave a plan for escape. The same is true of Adam and Eve with the coats of skins. In the case of Noah, again God had scarcely pronounced judgment, when He announced the plan of escape:
Genesis 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
Notice the details given by God - Nothing is left up to man, the whole plan is of God, He says:
Genesis
Incidentally, modern shipbuilders tell us that these dimensions are the most ideal measurements to ensure the safest and most seaworthy craft. The ark was built on dry land, miles from the nearest water. Noah had no model to work from, and yet the ark
had ideal dimensions for a ship accepted even by shipbuilders of today. What evidence for divine inspiration! Noah believed God, as we find in the book of Hebrews:
Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as
yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the
saving of his house; by the which he
condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
Noah believed when there was no evidence. Remember the ark is a type of the Lord Jesus, our hope against the judgment of God, and He too, must be accepted by faith. We too only have the Word of God and it by believing that Word we are saved. We must
say with Peter in I Peter:
Genesis 1:8 Whom having not
seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see
[him]
not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
It was the same in the days of Noah. He was warned of things "not seen as yet". God announced the coming of something which had never been seen before: namely rain. Evidently, before the flood, there had never been any rain. At least there is no mention of it, but the Word of God says in the book of Genesis:
Genesis 2:5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and
every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to
rain upon the earth, and [there was] not a man to till the ground.
Genesis 2:6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the
whole face of the ground.
D. Only One Door: - A most complete type of the Lord.
Remember man had no part in the planning. The Lord gave all the details for the construction. The description, brief, but complete continues:
Genesis 6:16 A window shalt thou make to the
ark, and in a cubit shalt
thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; [with] lower, second,
and third [stories] shalt thou make it.
Three details of the door
1. There is only one door. Today that would not be allowed by OSHA. Something of this size would have to be equipped with several exits, and have several life rafts, life boats and life preservers for its passengers. But none of these things are mentioned, because they were completely unnecessary as we shall see God provided for the perfect safety of the occupants, for God Himself was with them in the ship.
2. There was no need for any safety features within the ark, for it was a type of the Lord Jesus, and just as God was with Noah in the ship, "so God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself."
3. All can gain entrance - The dimensions of the door are not mentioned. We don't know how high or wide it was.
This is for a definite reason since no dimensions are given, all may gain entrance. No matter how great the sinner one may be, there is room for him through Him, and only through Him who said:
John 10:9 I
am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and
out, and find pasture.

Genesis 7:19 And the waters
prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under
the whole heaven, were covered.
Genesis
Genesis 7:21 And all flesh
died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and
of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth,
and every man:

nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.

A. The Size of the arc – (using the minimum cubit of 17.5 inches)
1. A barge-like vessel
a. Approx. 438 feet long
b. 73 feet wide
c. 44 feet high
2. Volume – 1,396,000 cubic feet – Compared to railroad car to carry livestock:
a. volume equal to 522 livestock cars
1. Stock car can carry 240 sheep
2. Arc could carry 155,000 animals the size of sheep – (522 x 240)
b. There were relatively few large animals like rhinoceros, elephant, dinosaurs, etc.
c. Most could be represented by small young animals
3. Size adequate
a. Many animals hibernate or estivate when conditions are not normal
b. Many water animals died – some survived
c. Only kinds had to be represented – 1 dog represents at least 144 kinds
