This Day Have I Begotten Thee

The Father’s Decree - Psalm 2

Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:… 10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.

11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, …Isaiah 11:12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

II Samuel 7:12  And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

II Samuel 7:13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

II Samuel 7:14  I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:…II Samuel 7:16  And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

I.       The Goim (or Heathen Nations) In Open Rebellion Against  the Lord and His Messiah – Shows the Time of the Prophecy

Psalm 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

Psalm 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,

Psalm 2:3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

A. The Disciples saw a partial fulfilment early on as taught in the Book of Acts:

Acts 4:18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

Acts 4:19  But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.

Acts 4:20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

Acts 4:21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.

Acts 4:22 For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.

Acts 4:23 ¶ And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.

Acts 4:24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:

Acts 4:25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?

Acts 4:26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.

B. But when we read the whole Psalm we see The complete Fulfilment

1. We see another time in the not too distant future when the nations will once again unite in rebellion against God.

2. This will be when the kings of the earth will join to rebel against God

3. This has been prophesied in both the Old and New Testaments.

Daniel 7: 23  Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.

Daniel 7:24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

Daniel 7:25  And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

a. This same ten-kingdom confederacy, in Daniel is seen to be a last days revival of the Roman Empire, is also seen in the book of Revelation where they make war against the Lamb (Jesus Christ).

Revelation 17: 12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

Revelation 17: 13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

Revelation 17: 14 ¶ These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

II. We See God’s Reaction – Laughing and Judgment – Day of the Lord

Psalm 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

Psalm 2:5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

A. God’s response to mankind’s final rebellion – He Laughs

1. To God this coalition of opposition is laughable

2. Why is this Opposition pathetic? – God works out everything by His own will.

Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

B. Even the united will of mankind, controlled by the Antichrist is no match for the sovereign Lord.  But God does more than just laugh –He terrifies them in His wrath.

1. For thousands of years the ‘Day of the Lord’ has been prophesied

a. The day when the full wrath of God will be poured out

b. It will be against those who oppose and hate His name. – We can be comforted, because we will not go through this, but be translated, or raptured

2. Both Revelation, Daniel, and other Scriptures,  gives a glimpse of “that Day”.

Revelation 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

Revelation 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

Revelation 6:17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Revelation 19:11 ¶ And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Revelation 19:12His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

Revelation 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Revelation 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Revelation 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

This “Day of the Lord” or That Day” Begins with a 7 year peace treaty, and on through the Tribulation Period to the 2nd Coming of Christ.  I think best described poetically, beginning with darkness and then morning on the mountains, by the prophet Joel:

Joel 2:1  Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;

Joel 2:2  A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations

III.      We See the Father’s Will Carried Out by The Son – How?

Psalm 2: 6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

A. Here we see The Sovereign and almighty God will

1. Set up His King, the Lord Jesus Christ,

2. Install Him on Zion, Where the King’s Palace is Located

B. In verse 5, we saw God rebuke the nations in His wrath.

C. Now in verse 6 we see the next scene to be played out - the establishment of the Messianic Kingdom on earth in Jerusalem.

1. This is the fulfilment of many prophecies that both Jews and Christians have longed for over thousands of years.

2. It is the day when righteousness shall reign and justice will prevail

3. It is the day when the glory of God will shine upon the earth.

D. Many Scriptures speak of “that Day”

1. Especially about Jerusalem being raised high above the other mountains

2. And Jerusalem from which the glory of the King and His city shall shine.

Joel 3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

Joel 3:17 So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

Joel 3:18 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.

Isaiah 2:1 ¶ The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

Isaiah 2:2  And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

Isaiah 2:3  And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Isaiah 2:4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Zechariah 14: 9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

Zechariah 14: 10  All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin’s gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king’s winepresses.

Zechariah 14: 11  And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.

Isaiah 62:1 ¶ For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.

Isaiah 62:2  And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name.

Isaiah 62:3  Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.

Isaiah 62:4  Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate…

All the Rest are Referenced Toward the End of Revelation

IV.  We See The Decree of the Father – Quoted 3 Times In The NT

Psalm 2:7 ¶ I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

A. But What Is “This Day” In Which The Son is Begotten? – Paul’s Sermon Tells Us by Quoting Psalm 2, Telling Us “This Day” is on the Resurrection:

Acts 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

Acts 13:34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.

B. Paul Also Quotes Psalm 2 In Hebrews 1:1-5 and tells us it happened at the  Ascension:

Hebrews 1:1  God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Hebrews 1:2  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Hebrews 1:3  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Hebrews 1:4  Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

Hebrews 1:5  For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

 C. But Paul Also Quotes Psalm 2 In Hebrews 5:5-7 and tells us it happened at Calvery:

Hebrews 5:5  So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

Hebrews 5:6  As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 5:7  Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

D. How Can One Day Be Three Days???  - Obviously ‘Begotten’ has More Than One meaning:

Revelation 1: Rev 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth.

D. Now, How Would It Look If We Looked At These Events Straight On?

V. We See the Father’s Response To The Son

Psalm 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

Psalm 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

A. The Father Gives The entire earth and all the nations upon it will come under the authority of the Son of God.

B. What is it that Christ has to do for this to be done?  - Only to ask the Father!

C. The timing brings us to the seventh and last trumpet in the Book of Revelation.

Revelation 11: 15  And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

D. We quoted earlier from Daniel chapter 7 to showing:

1. The kings of the earth will unite under one leader, the antichrist,

2. Opposing both the Messiah and His saints.

E. But that is not all Daniel saw!

Daniel 7:13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

Daniel 7:14  And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

F. Daniel was also given a revelation of the Father (the ‘Ancient of Days’) handing all authority and sovereign power over the nations into the hands of Jesus Christ – the one ‘like the son of man’.

G. Everything was created through Jesus Christ and He is also the heir of all things.

Hebrews 1:2  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

H. And the day will surely come when - He asks of the Father to receive His inheritance and from the presence of the Ancient of Days Jesus shall be given all authority and power over the heavens and the earth.

I. As wonderful as that is however, Daniel also saw what becomes of the saints – those who believe in Jesus as the Messiah.

Daniel 7: 27  And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

J. We shall also reign in the Messianic Kingdom on earth with Jesus, just as it was promised to the church in

Revelation 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

Revelation 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

Revelation 3: 21  To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

VI.  We See What Rulers And Kings Should Do

Psalm 2:10 ¶ Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

Psalm 2:11  Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

Psalm 2:12  Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

A. To serve the Lord with fear and trembling,

B. And to kiss (or do homage) to the Son, lest He become angry.

VII. We Have seen the exact opposite In This Psalm

A. God’s plans and purposes cannot be stopped

B. They will be fulfilled exactly as they have been laid out in Scripture.

VII. We See The Encouragement At The End For God’s People

A. Those of us who do believe in His name – ‘Blessed are those who take refuge in Him!’

1. What an understatement that will be when we live and rule with Him in His Kingdom!

2. The whole world stands or falls depending upon their attitude towards the Messiah,

B. Application:

WE WILL RULE AND REIGN WITH HIM IN THE KINGDOM

But… How About Right Now?

You Know, The Decree Has Been Made by the Father, and The King Is On The Throne Right Now!

This Could Change the Way We Think and Pray

Matthew 6:33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 6:9  After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Matthew 6:10  Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Matthew 6:11  Give us this day our daily bread.

Matthew 6:12  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

Matthew 6:13  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

No More: “I can’t wait to go to heaven because I can’t take this pain anymore.”

But, Lord bring your Kingdom to earth, because in your Kingdom there is no pain.

No More praying,  “Lord help me pay the bills because it is not a good witness.”

But, Lord help pay the bills because in your Kingdom there is no debt.

No More praying,  “Lord, Please send me a spouse so I will not be lonely”

But, In your Kingdom there is no loneliness.

Psalm 48:1 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.

Psalm 48:2  Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

Psalm 48:3  God is known in her palaces for a refuge.
