The Flood – Lesson 3

Faith And The Flood

Hebrews 11: 7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

Genesis 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

Genesis 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

The contrast is striking between the two lines.

For instance, the seventh in line from Adam on Cain’s line gives a rebellious proclamation of doubt in God’s Word, while the seventh in line on Seth’s side, believes God’s Word, and is raptured without dying.

However at the end of the first age both lines were corrupted:

Genesis 6:12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

B. How Many People In The First Age?

Using the assumption that every pre flood family had only six kids, consisting of three sons and three daughters, and that these kids married and had kids before their parents were eighty years old – very, very conservative assumption, then….

During Cain’s Life – 1st 800 Years

At The Time Of The Flood

120,000 People Inhabiting Earth

7 Billion People Inhabiting Earth

C. The Atmosphere Before The Flood

The Pre-Flood Atmosphere - Very Different From Today & The Future

1. Water vapor would reflect much of the incoming radiation – A Global Greenhouse Formed – Uniform warm temperature all over the earth

2. With uniform temperature- No great air mass movements – No windstorms

3. With no global wind - No rain except over the water, but it would evaporate immediately

4. With no global wind – No dust particles in atmosphere to implement rain

5. Comfortable uniform humidity by local evaporation and condensation – dew and ground fog in each day-night cycle

6. With adequate warm temperatures and humidity - No deserts or ice caps, but there would be Lush vegetation everywhere.

7. With water vapor filtering out cosmic rays, etc., - No mutations – Long life

8. With water canopy – high hyperbaric pressure – adds to longevity

9. The water canopy would later provide the means to effect the flood

Vapor Canopy Will Be Restored In The Millennium And New Earth

Psalm 148:4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.

Psalm 148:6 He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.

II. “Daughters of men” and “sons of God”.

A. "Daughters of men"  - (Hebrew, singular; the man Adam, therefore not the daughters of Cain, Seth, or men in general)

 B. "Sons of God"  - Seth did not have a son until 235 years after Creation; and his son did not have a son until 325 years after Creation. (Genesis 5:3,6,9)

C. Where did these sons come from?

1. They could not have been sons of Seth, for these marriages took place when men began to multiply - in the very beginning of the race before Seth had sons of

Marriageable age.

2. The term, sons of God, proves that they were the product of God, not Seth.

3. "Sons of God" were the fallen angels of I Peter 3:19; II Peter 2:4; and Jude 6:7

I Peter

I Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

I Peter 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

I Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

I Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto [even] baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

I Peter 3:22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

II Peter

II Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast [them] down to hell, and delivered [them] into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

II Peter 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth [person], a preacher of righteousness, ringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

D. “Sons of God” – Bene Elohim – Phrase used in Job – All Mean Angels

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

Job 38:4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. {hast…: Heb. knowest understanding}

Job 38:5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

Job 38:6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

E. A Similar Terms Also Mean Angels

1. – Bar Elohim – Means A Theophany or Angel

Daniel 3:25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

2. Bene Elim

a. Psalm 29:1 <<A Psalm of David.>> Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength. {ye mighty: Heb. ye sons of the mighty}

b. Psalm 89:6 For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?

  III. Giants and sons of God

Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare [children] to them, the same [became] mighty men which [were] of old, men of renown.

A. Five Facts About Giants and the sons of God.

1. Giants have lived on earth and are found in many Scriptures.

a. Known as Nephelim – Numbers 13:33

b. They Were Descendants Of Anak

c. Known As The Anakim

2. The fact that giants have no resurrection  (Isaiah 26:14) proves that giants were not ordinary men.  All ordinary men are to be resurrected (John 5:28-29), therefore giants must be a different class from the pure stock of Adam.

3. The fact that giants came only from a union of sons of God and daughters of men proves that their fathers were not ordinary men of the stock of Adam.  No such monstrosities have been nor can be produced from a union of ordinary men and women, regardless of how righteous the father was or how wicked the mother was.

 4. God's law of reproduction from the beginning has been to every thing his own kind.  It is not possible then, that giants could be produced by men and women.  (Genesis 1:11-12, 21,24-25; 8:19) of ordinary size.  It took a supernatural element, the purpose and power of Satan and his angels to make offspring of such extra size within the human species. After the variation of the species, which had to do with size only, and when the giants had come into being, they reproduced others of like size.  The revelation we have of giants gives us the true account of what the Greek myths try and recount from hearsay.  The Bible’s account is, of course, divinely inspired.

5. Moses also knew of giants in his time. - Moses probably inserted Mighty men of old, men of renown

B. The fallen angels sin was fornication is given in Jude 6-7, with the example of Sodom and Gomorra:

Jude 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Jude 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorra, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

IV. Earth Filled With Wickedness

Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. {every…: or, the whole imagination: the Hebrew word signifieth not only the imagination, but also the purposes and desires} {continually: Heb. every day}

Genesis 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

A. Three Observations – Why Did God Repent?

1. The Wickedness Of Man On The Earth Was Great

2. Every Imagination Of The Thoughts Of His Heart Was Only Evil Continually

3. It Repented God That He Had Made Man – (God changed His Mind)

B. God Repented Later In Scripture Concerning The King Of Israel:

I Samuel 15:11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

C. God’s Word At Creation Was:

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

D. At Noah’s Time, people had rejected God’s Word and we read:

Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Genesis 6:12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

E. God’s Word Concerning The Amalikites was:

Exodus 17: 14  And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

F. Why Didn’t Saul Do The Lord’s Will?

I Samuel 15:18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

I Samuel 15:19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?

I Samuel 15:20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

I Samuel 15:21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.

I Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

I Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. {witchcraft: Heb. divination}

I Samuel 15:24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

I Samuel 15:25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.

I Samuel 15:26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

G. Later On, The Word Teaches God Is Not A Man That He Should Repent

I Samuel 15:29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. {Strength: or, Eternity, or, Victory}

H. It Is Clear Now:  While God Is not a man that He should repent, but when man rejects God’s Word, The word “repent” is used of the Lord as He gives swift judgement, because His Word is Eternal

1 Samuel 15:33 ….And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.

And At Noah’s Time:

Genesis 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. {both…: Heb. from man unto beast}

Genesis 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Genesis 6:9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. {perfect: or, upright}

V. “As It Was In The Days Of Noah”

Luke 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

Luke 17:27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

VI. The Only People To Escape Judgment Will Be Those Who Believe God’s Word

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
