Coachlight Bible Study – Lesson XVII - Genesis Chapter 6:1-8

God’s Early Preaching In Genesis

During the days of Noah, the first age of history was brought to its climax.  The disease that began because of sin that seemed to have begun so innocently when Eve was tempted to doubt the Word of God, is now very visible.  This disease began to show its ugly head in the life of Cain, and came to maturity in the godless civilization of his descendants. This godless civilization digressed into such corruption and wickedness, that a world-wide judgment was needed.

These same characteristics will be repeated in the last days of this current age.  The study of the flood is very important to us today.  It is important not only to understand past history, but also to seek guidance for the future. The answer Christ gave to His disciples’ question illustrate this perfectly.

The disciples asked:

Matthew 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Christ replied, and after giving many signs, said:

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

The significance of this text can be demonstrated with three points.  Christ not only verified the history of the Great Flood, but testified to the fact that He was preaching to us in the ancient text.  He is also encouraging us to study the days before the Flood, because these will also characterize the days just before His return.

The contrast is striking between the two lines.  For instance, the seventh in line from Adam on Cain’s line gives a rebellious proclamation of doubt in God’s Word, while the seventh in line on Seth’s side, believes God’s Word, and is ruptured without dying.

However at the end of the first age both lines were corrupted:

Genesis 6: 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

B. How Many People In The First Age?

Using the assumption that every pre flood family had only six kids, consisting of three sons and three daughters, and that these kids married and had kids before their parents were eighty years old – very, very conservative assumption, then….

During Cain’s Life – 1st 800 Years

At The Time Of The Flood

120,000 People Inhabiting Earth

Seven Billion People Inhabiting Earth

C. The Atmosphere Before The Flood

The Pre-Flood Atmosphere - Very Different From Today & The Future

1. Water vapor would reflect much of the incoming radiation – A Global Greenhouse Formed – Uniform warm temperature all over the earth

2. With uniform temperature- No great air mass movements – No windstorms

3. With no global wind - No rain except over the water, but it would evaporate immediately

4. With no global wind – No dust particles in atmosphere to implement rain

5. Comfortable uniform humidity by local evaporation and condensation – dew and ground fog in each day-night cycle

6. With adequate warm temperatures and humidity - No deserts or ice caps, but there would be Lush vegetation everywhere.

7. With water vapor filtering out cosmic rays, etc., - No mutations – Long life

8. With water canopy – high hyperbaric pressure – adds to longevity

9. The water canopy would later provide the means to effect the flood

Vapor Canopy Will Be Restored In The Millennium And New Earth

Psalm 148:4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.

Psalm 148:6 He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.

II. God’s Sermons

A. Creation Of Woman – Adam Is A Type Of Christ Getting His Bride

1. Christ is called the "Second Man"  (I Corinthians 15:47)

2. Christ is called the  "Last Adam" (I Corinthians 15:45)

3. Christ is called a “figure” of Him to come:

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: {for that: or, in whom}

Romans 5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

Romans 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

4. God’s Text Is A Superlatively Beautiful Picture

Genesis 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and  he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

a. Adam slept - God created from his wounded side a wife -    part of himself - He paid for her by the shedding of blood.

b. When Adam woke up he said:

Genesis 2:23 And Adam said, This [is] now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

 c. A dim picture - Let Paul shed some light.  Speaking of marriage he taught:

Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

 d. Now all is clear

1. Adam is a picture of Christ

2. Christ left His Father's house to gain His bride

3. At the price of His own life, Jesus, the Last Adam, like the first, must be put to sleep to purchase His bride, the Church

4. Jesus also slept three days after He died on the cross

5. His side too, was opened after He had fallen asleep

6. and from that wounded side redemption flowed

7. The church - His body also purchased.

8. The church, like Eve, was a new creation

a. Not by a natural birth

b.But by a supernatural operation by God.

Ephesians 5:25 ... even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself  for it;

Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

B. The First Sin – Adam A Double Type Of Christ

Genesis 3:6  And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

1. Eve Was Deceived – Adam Was Not

I Timothy 2: 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

2. Adam Knew The Full Consequences Of His Act – It Meant His Death

3. Adam Loved Eve, His Bride, Even At The Price Of His Own Death

4. Christ Also Loved The Church, His Bride, And Gave Himself For It

5. Christ’s Bride Also Had Been Deceived By The Enemy

6. The Difference Between The Two   Adam Became A Sinner, But Christ:

II Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

This Is The Mystery That We Read About In Ephesians:

Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

Ephesians 5::32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

 7. First Clear Gospel Message – Adam Becomes A Double Type

Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

8. This Is A Clear Picture Of Calvary

a. Man Had Disobeyed god And Was Under Sentence Of Death

b. Instead Of Coming To God, Man Tried To Effect His Own Salvation

c. Imagining They Could Do Something To Make Themselves More Presentable To God, They Sewed Fig Leaves Together

Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they [were] naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

d. The Fig Leaves Might As Well Been Poison Oak – Totally Inadequate

e. So They Hid From God

 9. The Lord To The Rescue

a. While They Were Hiding, God Was Looking For Them With Grace

b. The Lord Rejected Their Vain Attempts To Cover Their Guilt

c. We Read Of His Marvelous Message Of Redemption And Grace:

Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats[03801] of skins, and clothed them.

10. The Moment That God Killed The Animal, Adam Became A Double Type

a. Adam Stopped Being The Type Of Christ, And Became A Double Type

b. Adam Became The Type Of The Sinner Needing Atonement

c. The Innocent Animal That God Killed Became The Type Of Christ

11. This Is The Pattern For Salvation

a. God Took The Skin From A Sacrificial Lamb

b. God Wrapped It Around Adam’s Naked Body

c. This Layed Down The Eternal Salvation Principal

1. It must be By God's gift and God’s work alone.

2. It Must Be By The Death Of An Innocent Substitute

3.  It Must Be By The Shedding Of Blood

The Hebrew Word translated “coats” actually means “robe” and was also used of the priest’s robes. It covered the whole body.

03801 tntk kethoneth keth-o’-neth or  tntk kuttoneth koot-to’-neth from an unused root meaning to cover completely

coat 23, garment 5, robe 1; 29

1) tunic, under-garment

1a) a long shirt-like garment usually of linen

12. The Illustration To God’s Sermon

1. The Story Of The Coats Of Skins Taught Them Of God's Requirements of sacrifice.

2. Both were very religious, and believed God. Cain seems to be the most religious of the two, because he was the first to come up with the idea of bringing an offering unto the Lord.

3. The religion of Cain is briefly stated in the book of Genesis:

Genesis 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. {in process…: Heb. at the end of days}

4. Cain was very sincere, as well as very religious, and thought that he must do something to atone for his sin.

5. But God would have nothing to do with it, and we read:

Genesis 4:5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6. Why did God reject Cain's offering?  Because he ignored God's Requirements

a. Cain's 1st mistake - He brought of the fruit of the ground, the result of his own labors, and the works of his own hands. - Instead of a gift from God.

b. Cain's 2nd mistake, No death of an innocent substitute.

c. Cain's 3rd mistake was No shedding of blood - In Hebrews we read:

7. God accepted Abel's offering however.

Genesis 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

8. Why did God respect Abel's offering?

a. He brought a lamb. (a firstling of the flock)

b. He put it to death on the altar.

c. It was by the shedding of blood.

C. The Promised Seed (Genesis 3:15)

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

1. Here We Have The Sign Of The Promised “Seed” or Redeemer

2. Here We Have The Promise Of Two Seeds

3. Here We Have The Promise Of An Age-Long Battle Between These Seeds

4. Here We Have The Promise Of The Virgin Birth

a. The triumphant Seed of the Woman will  crush (literally) the head of the seed of the serpent.

b. The serpent would bruise her seed on the heel, but He will be victorious

5. This “Battle of the Seeds” is seen throughout the Bible

a. Cain killing Abel

b. Moses saved out of the Nile

c. All Jewish boys sentenced to death by Herod the Great at Christ’s Birth

d. Christ's Second Coming with His saints destroying evil - Revelation 19:11-21

8. All through the everyone else has been the seed of some man - never of a woman

9. Jesus did not have a sinful father, but was born of a virgin

10. He was God in a man’s body

11. Isaiah Prophecied About The Virgin Birth:

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. {shall call: or, thou, O virgin, shalt call}

Isaiah 7: 15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

Isaiah 7: 16 For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.

12. This Virgin Obviously Points To The “Seed Of The Woman”

13. The Hebrew Word Almah For Virgin Occurs Only Four Other Times

a. Its Use Consistent With “Virgin”

b. Matthew Used The Greek Parthenos Word That Can Only Mean Virgin

14. The Coming Redeemer Would Be The Descendant Of:

a. Shem (Genesis 9:26)

b. Abraham (Genesis 22:18)

c. Isaac (Genesis 26:4)

d. Jacob (Genesis 28:14)

e. Judah (Genesis 49:10)

f. David (II Samuel 7:12.13)

15. The Line From Judah Proceeded From David To Coniah (or Jeconiah)

a. Coniah Was A Wicked King

b. God Said:

Jeremiah 22:28 Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? …

Jeremiah 22:30 Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.

c. Alleged Contradictions In The Bible Need To Be Understood In The Context Of The Entire Bible

1. Matthew Gives The Legal or Royal lineage To Christ

a. David, Through Solomon and Conias

b. Through Joseph, The Foster Father Of Christ

2. Luke Gives The True biological Line

a. From David To Nathan To Heli, The Father Of Mary

b. To Have Legal Right To The Throne, Christ Must Be The Legal Son Of Joseph

c. He Could Not Be Of The Lineage Of Coniah, Because Of The Prophecy

d. He Had To Be Of The Seed Of David To Occupy The Throne

Joseph - Foster Father Of Jesus

Heli - Father Of Mary

Genesis 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

Genesis 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they [were] fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

III. “Daughters of men” and “sons of God”.

 A. "Daughters of men"  - (Hebrew, singular; the man Adam, therefore not the daughters of Cain, Seth, or men in general)

 B. "Sons of God"  - Seth did not have a son until 235 years after Creation; and his son did not have a son until 325 years after Creation. (Genesis 5:3,6,9)

 C. Where did these sons come from?

1. They could not have been sons of Seth, for these marriages took place when men began to multiply - in the very beginning of the race before Seth had sons of

Marriageable age.

2. The term, sons of God, proves that they were the product of God, not Seth.

3. "Sons of God" were the fallen angels of I Peter 3:19; II Peter 2:4; and Jude 6:7

I Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

I Peter 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

I Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

I Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto [even] baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

I Peter 3:22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

II Peter

II Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast [them] down to hell, and delivered [them] into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

II Peter 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth [person], a preacher of righteousness, ringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

IV. Giants and “sons of God”

Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after

that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare [children] to them, the same [became] mighty men which [were] of old, men of renown.

A. Four Facts About Giants and the sons of God.

 1. Giants have lived on earth and are found in many Scriptures.

2. The fact that giants have no resurrection  (Isaiah 26:14) proves that giants were not ordinary men.  All ordinary men are to be resurrected (John 5:28-29), therefore giants must be a different class from the pure stock of Adam.

3. The fact that giants came only from a union of sons of God and daughters of men proves that their fathers were not ordinary men of the Adamite stock.  No such        monstrosities have been nor can be produced from a union of ordinary men and women, regardless of how righteous the father was or how wicked the mother was.

4. God's law of reproduction from the beginning has been to every thing his own kind.  It is not possible then, that giants could be produced by men and women.  (Genesis 1:11-12, 21,24-25; 8:19) of ordinary size.  It took a supernatural element, the purpose and power of Satan and his angels to make offspring of such extra size within the human species.  After the variation of the species, which had to do with size only, and when the giants had come into being, they reproduced others of like size.  The revelation we have of giants gives us the true account of what the Greek myths try and recount from hearsay.  Our account is of course divinely inspired.

B. The fallen angels sin was fornication is given in Jude 6-7, with the example of Sodom and Gomorra:

Jude 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Jude 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorra, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

C. The Reason For this Union Was To Attempt To Corrupt The “Seed Of The Woman”

D. But We Read:

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

Genesis 6:4  There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. {every…: or, the whole imagination: the Hebrew word signifieth not only the imagination, but also the purposes and desires} {continually: Heb. every day}

Genesis 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

Genesis 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. {both…: Heb. from man unto beast}

Genesis 6:8  But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Remember:

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
