Coachlight Bible Study – Exodus Lesson 16

Hearing The Voice Of The Lord – Exodus Chapters 15-19

I Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Psalms 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Today’s lesson deals with obedience.  Obedience is a much disliked word, and probably one of the most misunderstood words in Biblical language.  When God speaks, He spells out the meaning in no uncertain terms, and people still have a tendency to skip over the true interpretation of the word, and disregard it because it is impossible for the natural man to obey.  For example, Exodus 15:26:

If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God,

And wilt do that which is right in his sight,

And wilt give ear to his commandments,

And keep all his statutes,

The Lord explains with Hebrew poetry, that believing that God’s Word is complete Truth no matter what the circumstances may seem to reveal, is the exact same thing as obedience.  While it is true the natural man, that old nature that we will drag around with us until the Rapture, can not obey or please God; the complete Truth of the matter is that when we believe God’s Word as righteous and true regardless of the surrounding circumstances, the Holy Spirit then leads us on a path to righteousness.  This is being lead by the Spirit or walking in the Spirit.

If the Israelites had walked in the Spirit after their deliverance by blood and power, the Law would not have to be spelled out on Mt. Sinai.  They would not have reverted to their former bondage of sin and idolatry.

It is the same today.  God truly delivers us by the Blood of the Lamb and the Power of the Holy Spirit from the bondage of the old nature.  The end result of this act of God is eternal life.  If, however, we believe the surrounding circumstances thus disregarding God’s Word as Truth, we are in effect picking up that old nature that can never please God.  The end result of this is death.

Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Then how do we obey God?  We obey God when we control our minds.  We have the ability to allow our minds to “mind the things of the flesh”, or to mind “the things of the Spirit.  This is our part.  David knew this when he wrote:

Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Psalms 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Psalm 119:97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

The Holy Spirit does the rest.

I. Why Did Israel Have The Tribulations While Marching To Sinai?

A. Bitter Marah Oasis Trial

1. Remember the song after being delivered by power of the Holy Spirit?

Exodus 15:16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them [Israel’s enemies]; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

Exodus 15:17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.

Exodus 15:18 The LORD shall reign for ever and ever.

2. Just three days later, the same crowd said:

Exodus 15: 24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?

3. Did Yahweh provide for His murmuring people?

Exodus 15:25And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute[02706] and an ordinance, [04941] and there he proved [05254] them,

Exodus 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

4. What was involved making the bitter trial sweet?

a. People’s harkening to the Voice of the LORD – Doing what is right in His sight

b. People’s giving ear to His commandments – keeping all His statutes

5. Same verse explains Why Yahweh lead them to Marah instead of the shortest route?

I Peter 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

I Peter 1:6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations[3986]:

I Peter 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

I Peter 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

I Peter 1:9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

B. The Wilderness of Sin Trial of Hunger

1. Just 1½ months after leaving Egypt, The People Look Back To Their Bondage:

Exodus 16:2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:

Exodus 16:3 And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

2. Again the circumstances of hunger had been allowed to change their mindset

3. Why did Yahweh allow His people to go through this trial?

Exodus 16:4 Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove[05254] them, whether they will walk in my law[08451], or no.

4. Did Yahweh’s people walk in His Towrah?

Exodus 16:20 Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.

Exodus 16:27 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.

a. This was a perfect time to enjoy another miracle from Yahweh

b. What was the part to be played by the deliveries? –

1. Walk in His Torah

2. Which is the same as believing His Word as righteous and the Truth

C. Pitching in Rephidim trial of thirst

1. Did Yahweh’s people now believe His Word?

Exodus 17:2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

Exodus 17:3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

2. Did Yahweh give water to His people?

Exodus 17:5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

Exodus 17:6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

3. Can we see that rock was actually the pre-incarnate Christ:

I Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

I Corinthians 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

I Corinthians 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

I Corinthians 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

I Corinthians 10:5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

I Corinthians 10:6 Now these things were our examples, ….

4. Can we see then and now how believing God’s Word and the flow of the Holy Spirit is connected concerning God’s delivered people?

Exodus 17:6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

5. Can we see then and now that setting our mindset (inner desires) on God’s Word is the difference between murmuring and being more than conquerors?

6. Can we see then and now that this is actually walking in the Spirit?

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

II. Institution Of The Mosaic Covenant

Exodus 19:1 In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.

Exodus 19:2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.

C. Mosaic Covenant Unlike Abrahamic Covenant– Conditional

1. Two covenants with God in Scripture

a. Unconditional – God says, “I Will” – (Abrahamic, Palestinian, Davidic, etc.)

b. Conditional – God says, “I will if” – (Mosaic)

D. Israel Never Did “Listen To His Voice” Or  “Keep His Covenant”

Jeremiah 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

Jeremiah 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

E. A New Covenant With Israel – Actually An Extension Of The Abrahamic

1. Yahweh has already begun this “New Covenant” – Israel again a Nation

Jeremiah 31:1 At the same time, saith the LORD, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.

Jeremiah 31:2 Thus saith the LORD, The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.

Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

Jeremiah 31:4 Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry.

Jeremiah 31:5 Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.

Jeremiah 31:6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the LORD our God.

Jeremiah 31:7 For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.

Jeremiah 31:8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.

2. The New Covenant

Jeremiah 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

3. All conditional things offered Israel under the Law Are Freely Given To believers today

I Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

I Peter 2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Revelation 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

4. This is what Paul was talking about in Romans:

Romans 11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. …

Romans 11:5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Romans 11:7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded

Romans 11:8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day…

Romans 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

Romans 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

Romans 11:27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

Romans 11:28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.

Romans 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

Romans 11:30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:

Romans 11:31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.

Romans 11:32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

III. The Israelites Did Not Believe Moses Until They Heard God’s Voice

Exodus 19:7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him.

Exodus 19:8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.

Exodus 19:9 And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.

This cloud is, of course, the Holy Spirit

I Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

I Corinthians 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

IV. How Can We “Hear” God? – This Actually Equals Obeying God

A. Believe His Word Above The Circumstances

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

B. Meditate On His Word Day And Night

C. Make Our Hearts Desire And God’s Word The Same

Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

D. This Is, Of Course, Walking In The Spirit: The Holy Spirit Then Leads:

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Romans 8:26  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Romans 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
