Psalm 19 – Three Witnesses of God or Behold Jesus Christ

Hebrews 10:19 – 22  Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

Hebrews 10:20  By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God;

Hebrews 10:21 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith,

Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.  (HIGH PRIEST)

Three Witnesses of God

If we cannot understand God of creation, then we will not be able to comprehend Him in Scripture or Spiritually.

Psalm 19 consists of three sections beginning with verses 1-6: The Witness of God in the Heavens, then transitioning in verses 7-11 The Witness of God in Scripture, and lastly, in verses 12-14 this Psalm proclaims the Witness of God in personal experience. We will find that it acknowledges God in creation, then moves into the acknowledgment of God in Scripture, and then God living inside His people - the work of the Holy Spirit.  We will see this developing from the Glory of God declared in creation, transitioning to the revelation of God in the Bible,  all with the intended goal of  sanctification and glorification, so that the people of God would develop into ruling kings and priests  (Revelation 5:10).  We will be able to see God’s witness above us in the heavens, before us in the Bible, and within us by the work of the Holy Spirit. It all begins with the Glory of God revealed by the heavens, Hebrew, rakiah translated “firmament” or “expanse”.  It means that that is “stretched out”, and includes the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd heaven.  (Air, stars, planets, as well as, where God resides.  This is all glorious, but there is a deeper experience that the application of this verse will reveal.

I. The Witness of God in the Heavens – (Creation)

Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Psalm 19:2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.

Psalm 19:3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

Psalm 19:4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,

Psalm 19:5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.

Psalm 19:6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

A. We can notice that this “witness of God” develops all through the Bible

B. You may notice that the text does not read: “The heavens declare the glory of an evolutionary process”

C. Look at some cross-references for these verses:

Psalm 8:3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

Psalm 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

Psalm 115:16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

Psalm 148:3 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.

Psalm 148:4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.

Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

Isaiah 40:23 That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.

Isaiah 40:24 Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.

Isaiah 40:25 To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.

Isaiah 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.

Jeremiah 10:11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

Jeremiah 10:12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

We cannot understand the Spiritual unless we first understand the earthly meaning.

D. Let’s turn to – Jesus has explained to Nicodemus that Nicodemus must be born again if he wants to enter the Kingdom of heaven.

E. John 3:11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

John 3:12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

F. Nicodemus did not understand the earthly answer, how could he ever understand the Spiritual answer?

G. We can learn of God from Creation – although this is limited, none less important:

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Romans 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] unto them.

Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

1. We can know at least three things from observing creation

a. There is a God (Creator) – (Won’t know His name)

b. That the Creator is in charge – He sets the rules – (Won’t know the rules)

c. We are accountable to the Creator- )Won’t know when)

2. Notice that it all begins with Creation.

3. If we swallow the evolutionary teachings of ungodly men, then the understanding will be crippled, and Romans 1 tells us the outcome if we would stay on that path:

Romans 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Romans 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Romans 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Romans 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Romans 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

4. Romans also shows the works of God in salvation (Justification, Sanctification, and Glorification) – But remember it all begins with the Creation in chapter one.  We could not understand God as the redeemer unless we first acknowledge Him as Creator.

Romans 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Romans 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Romans 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Romans 1:31 Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Romans 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

H. Let’s turn to Revelation chapters 4 and 5.  We find that this truth is taught all through the Bible.

I. Remember that Revelation is divided into three parts.  Chapter 1 being the “Things which thou hast seen; Chapters 2-3, the things which are; and chapters 4-22, the things which shall be hereafter.

1. Chapter 4 is all centered about a Throne – One on the throne is worshipped

2. Chapter 5 is centered on and all about a Lamb. – The Lamb is worshipped

3. Look what heaven says when they worship in chapter four:

Revelation 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Revelation 4:9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

Revelation 4:10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

4. Look at what heaven is saying as heaven worships in verse 5:

Revelation 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

Revelation 5:7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

Revelation 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

Revelation 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

If you have a problem with God being the Creator, then you will have an enormous problem worshiping Him as the Redeemer as well as a serious problem and no relationship with God.

II. The Witness of God in His Word

Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

Psalm 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

Psalm 19:9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

Psalm 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Psalm 19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

Creation account in Genesis 1 is a Revelation of Elohim, the Creator God

What does the Creation account in Genesis 1 reveal?  Just look at chapter one and see how many times God said, God saw, God called, God made, and God Blessed.

God is Revealed in Genesis Chapter 1

God Created

A. God Created - Righteousness is revealed from faith to faith

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

B. While the first six verses were great, they are incomplete.

C. You can observe creation for 100 years and never know from that observation God’s name.

D. The natural revelation is not sufficient to know God.

E. You could look at the stars and know that it would be wrong to take the Lord’s name in vain-but then you would not know His name.

F. You can not know God by just looking at His creation.

G. To know God, you need a Bible.

H. In verses 1-6 God is mentioned once as Elohim (Creator God)

I. In verses 7-11 He is mentioned several times as LORD, (Jehovah) Covenant God.

J. David was a shepherd and stayed outside protecting a herd for years – He was a student of creation.

K. From these verses we can see that David was a great student of God’s Word as he said:

Psalm 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Psalm 19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

III. The Witness of God Inside His Servant

Now, in these verses, we can see David graduate to a deeper relationship with God.  He starts out talking about God by means of the things created, and by the time we get to verse 11, David is talking to God!

Psalm 19:12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

Psalm 19:13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

A. You know that David realized that relationship with God as he compared the firmament to a “tabernacle

B. David compared the firmament to a tabernacle for the sun

C. David compared the sun as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber

D. David also uses the comparison of a strongman striving to win a race.

E. Doesn’t this remind you of another Son – The Son of God

F. Who also is a bridegroom – the church’s Bridegroom

G. And He is a Strong man – the God-man

H. Doesn’t this also remind you of another Tabernacle – a heavenly Tabernacle?

I. This Tabernacle also has three parts – Outer court, Holy place, and the holy of holies

J. Not just anyone can enter in – Oh, anyone can enter into the outer court, but no farther

K. There is an inner place, where only cleansed priests can enter.

L. If you were to enter the holy place the first thing to see, would be the table of shewbread

M. You would also see the candlestick burning oil. (Symbol of the Holy Spirit illumination on the Word of God.  You would have graduated to fellowship by the Word, but missing the intimacy of a relationship with Christ.

N. But, there is a deeper place, where only one man would enter through the veil once a year to sprinkle blood on the mercy seat on top of the Ark of the Covenant.

O. You know what happened on crucifixion day?

Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

H. The veil was rent in two from top to bottom granting us access to our Great High Priest.

Application:  We one yields to presumptuous sin (Proudly sinning with a sin you know is wrong and doing it anyway) - Do not let presumptuous sins in the door –

Remember in Genesis 4:7 God told Cain: If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire,

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

What happens is a person sins with a sin he knows is wrong and does it anyway?  (Undoubtedly thinking he’ll make it right with God later).  That sin that he “let in the door” later owns that person.  It takes over that person’s thinking and pretty soon he is indulging himself with that the sin not by his own power, but is committing that sin and it will be exposed.  It happens when he lets that sin inside that “lieth at the door” and ends up destroying that person.  You see that if you indulge yourself in presumptuous sin, pretty soon you will indulge in it the last time because it will be exposed. Families destroyed, lost jobs, etc. come from this.  It will not happen if we do not let sin in the door.

When we go “into the sanctuary” and “keep back presumptuous sin” That means leaving the outer court and entering in the “Holy Place”.  It is then that we have that “fellowship of the Mystery” we read about in Ephesians 3. When we have intimate fellowship (are lifted into the “Heavenly Places” (Ephesians 1:3) with Christ Who, is in His Sanctuary and is completely holy.  It is then that no sin can come in the door even the “secret sins” or sins “lying at the door” can enter.  It is then that we can have fellowship with Christ

Hebrews 9:1 Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.

Hebrews 9:2 For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.

Hebrews 9:3 And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;

Hebrews 9:4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

Hebrews 9:5 And over it the cherubim of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

Hebrews 9:6 Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.

Hebrews 9:7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

Hebrews 9:8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

Hebrews 9:9  Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

Hebrews 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

Hebrews 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Hebrews 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Hebrews 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Hebrews 9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

Hebrews 9:17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

Hebrews 9:18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

Hebrews 9:19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,

Hebrews 9:20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

Hebrews 9:21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Hebrews 9:23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Hebrews 9:24  For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

Hebrews 9:25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

Hebrews 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Hebrews 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Hebrews 10:1  For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

Hebrews 10:2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

Hebrews 10:3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

Hebrews 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

Hebrews 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

Hebrews 10:6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

Hebrews 10:7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

Hebrews 10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

Hebrews 10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Hebrews 10:11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

Hebrews 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

Hebrews 10:13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Hebrews 10:15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

Hebrews 10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

Hebrews 10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

Hebrews 10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

Hebrews 10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

Hebrews 10:20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

Hebrews 10:21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Hebrews 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

Hebrews 10:28 He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

Hebrews 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

Hebrews 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

Hebrews 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Hebrews 10:32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

Hebrews 10:33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

Hebrews 10:34  For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

Hebrews 10:35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

Hebrews 10:36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

Hebrews 10:32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

Hebrews 10:37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.

Hebrews 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Hebrews 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
