Coachlight Bible Study – I Thessalonians Chapter 2

The Characteristics Of True Evangelism

The background of this chapter again goes back to the book of Acts.  The Scripture tells us that Paul, Silas, and Timothy “assayed” to go to Bythynia (in Asia), but the “Spirit suffered them not.” (Acts 16:6-10)  Paul then went to Troas, and there saw a vision, that came to be called the “Macedonian Call”.  While Paul’s obedience to the Macedonian call is the reason that Europe heard the Gospel, Paul’s experience in Philippi is a big reason why we today have chapter 2, which is a great account of what true evangelism  or discipling actually is.  Paul couldn’t be there in person, so he wrote the letter.  The intension of this lesson is to demonstrate in Scripture that receiving and acting on the Word of God, otherwise called by Spurgeon: a “Pursuit of Holiness” results in God performing His work of evangelism, and not a man-made substitute.

I. True Evangelism is rooted in the Truth
